Service to the community is so important to Montefiore, we state it as part of our mission, along with patient care, education and research. Our keen attention to local needs makes us a good neighbor to the people of the North Bronx and lower Westchester County, the broad community we serve.
As the largest employer in the Bronx, we boost the economic health of our area.
As a healthcare institution, we improve the well-being of countless residents. Through our development arm, we make the neighborhoods around our facilities safe and productive.

Providing healthcareMontefiore’s medical departments partner with national and community-based groups on health-outreach studies and programs that target specific needs, especially of children, women and seniors. We also sponsor health and education programs in local elementary, middle and high schools. Our integrated system of community-based care ensures that local residents have high-quality, easily accessible healthcare. Montefiore’s Primary Care Network is among the largest in the nation, with some 300 participating doctors in offices around the Bronx and Westchester. |

Sponsoring health-education initiativesMontefiore is an active corporate citizen, contributing our expertise to educate residents about health issues and healthier lifestyles. Our Community Relations team members sit on community boards and planning committees. We sponsor a variety of activities and events, including health fairs and neighborhood health walks like the Colon Cancer Challenge. We use our sizable knowledge and influence in ways that make us a positive force in the community. |

Developing neighborhood vitalityMany institutions contribute locally through education and sponsorship. Few can boast a development arm with the record of Montefiore’s Mosholu Preservation Corporation (MPC). It was formed in 1981 to promote the safety and vitality of the neighborhoods around our facilities, particularly in the northwest Bronx. Today well-kept streets, attractive buildings and busy shops are the result of more than 20 years of successful development work. In that time, MPC has purchased and restored numerous properties. It has motivated local landlords and businesses to reinvest and reapply their commitment to the community. Some restored housing is used for programs that further promote community health. The Lead Safe House near Moses Division, for instance, gives families a temporary residence while their homes are cleared of lead-based substances. MPC also publishes a local newspaper, The Norwood News, which supports civic activism. |
Community service plan
Montefiore's service area — the Bronx and southern Westchester — contains communities which are among the most economically disadvantaged in the nation; with health status indicators that bespeak a continuing lack of access to quality health care services. It is this continuing need which underpins Montefiore's historical, mission-driven investment in services to its community. As the major provider of health care services to the people of this borough, Montefiore has assumed a leadership position in identifying and responding to those needs.
