Steven M. Safyer, MD, is President and CEO of Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. Montefiore is the University Hospital and Academic Medical Center for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM).
An accomplished physician leader and highly respected healthcare executive, Dr. Safyer has been at Montefiore for 25 years, most recently as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. Throughout his medical career, Dr. Safyer has been a strong advocate for underserved populations including those who are incarcerated and affected by drug addiction, HIV infection and tuberculosis. His accomplishments include establishing unique programs to combat HIV and tuberculosis; building an extensive community-based primary care network; commissioning cutting-edge information systems; developing strategies to manage care; creating nationally recognized quality and safety programs; and building a regional health information-sharing organization for the Bronx.
Dr. Safyer received his bachelor of science degree from Cornell University and his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He conducted his internship and residency in social medicine at Montefiore Medical Center. He is board certified in Internal Medicine. He holds academic appointments as Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine and Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and founding member of The Health Management Academy.
Dr. Safyer has been an appointed member of numerous panels and committees for regional and national organizations including the Hospital Association of New York State, The Greater New York Hospital Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges.
In 2006 Dr. Safyer was named Chair of the Bronx Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) Board.
The Bronx RHIO is an independent regional health information sharing organization that seeks to connect medical records across the borough. The membership of the Bronx RHIO encompasses more than 90 percent of the hospitals, health centers and long-term care facilities and physicians in the borough, which is home to 1.5 million people.
A frequent lecturer on topics including health information technology, population-based medicine and public health issues, Dr. Safyer has authored and co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association and the American Journal of Public Health, covering subjects ranging from computerized medical records to tuberculosis in prison populations.
